Donny and Jenn wanted photos to celebrate their first season with Teddy, their new puppy. The Public Garden was the perfect spot — quiet paths, golden autumn trees, and plenty of space for Teddy to explore.

The session
He brought so much personality: curious, energetic, and honestly one of the cutest puppies I've photographed. We walked the paths through the leaves, sat down in them, let Teddy lead when he wanted to lead, and got a few frames of just the two of them while he was busy. No poses, no pressure — just a family enjoying the season.
Photographing a puppy
A nine-month-old puppy doesn't sit still, so I don't ask him to. The trick is to keep moving, shoot fast, and treat the chaos as the point — the frame of Teddy posing for the camera happened by accident, which is how the best ones do. Jenn put it well in her review: relaxed, fun and un-intimidating, even with a very energetic puppy.
Why the Public Garden in fall
Golden trees, wide paths, benches, the pond — and it's a short walk from anywhere in Back Bay or Beacon Hill. Autumn is the Garden's best season for a family session because the color does the decorating and the crowds thin out on weekday afternoons.
If you're planning a family or couples session with a dog
- Bring treats and a favorite toy — I'll use them to get the dog looking at the camera for the one frame that needs it.
- Plan for the dog's energy, not yours. Forty-five minutes is plenty; after that everyone's done.
