The plan
The Public Garden was the spot, and the pond was the backdrop. What Brijesh worried about most was the thing every planner worries about — being seen — so that's what we built around. I set up early by the pond, well before they arrived, and stayed out of sight the way I always do here: the Garden is full of people with cameras, and one more doesn't register.
The moment
When they arrived it looked like any other afternoon walk — the two of them coming down the path, slowing, Brijesh turning to her — until he stopped and went to one knee. Janelle had no idea. The surprise was total, and the frames from the moment she realized what was happening through the first hug are the ones I'd put on the wall.
Portraits after
After the moment settled they stayed for portraits around the Garden while the light was still perfect: the open field, the autumn trees, a kiss, and a quiet one at the end with just the two of them. Janelle said afterwards that the posing felt easy and natural, which is the whole aim — I give a little direction, then get out of the way.
If you're planning a proposal at the Public Garden
- Pick the pond side you want in the background and I'll find the position where you can walk in naturally.
- Your only job is the question. Being seen, timing, the crowd — that's mine.
- Leave 30–45 minutes after the yes for portraits. The light and the nerves are both better once it's done.
