The plan
We picked a spot tucked into the Arnold Arboretum, where the trails wind through old-growth trees and the city disappears. The Arboretum is big, so the plan was really a route: which gate, which path, where the walk would naturally pause, and where I'd fall in behind them. Laura and I went over it until it felt like a weekend stroll rather than a plan — because to Sara, that's all it could look like.
The moment
I arrived early and blended in with the Saturday walkers. Laura guided Sara down the path like it was just another weekend stroll, then stopped, turned, and asked the question. Sara's face said everything. Laura wrote afterwards that I stayed completely hidden through the whole long walk, which is the part of this job I take most seriously.
Portraits after
Then we slowed down — an embrace among the trees, the two of them celebrating, a wide frame of the Arboretum on a winter morning, a close one, a final engagement portrait. Bare branches, low sun and nobody around: winter here is quieter than any season in the Public Garden.

- Start with a gate and a realistic route. The Arboretum is enormous; the plan is the path, not just the spot.
- Winter mornings are the quiet window. Weekends bring dog walkers and runners, but the trails absorb them.
