Laura came to me with a vision and a nervous excitement I could feel through the phone. She wanted to surprise Sara somewhere that felt like theirs — quiet, beautiful, away from the noise. We picked a spot tucked into the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain, where the trails wind through old-growth trees and the city disappears. I arrived early and blended in with the Saturday walkers. Laura guided Sara down the path like it was just another weekend stroll, then stopped, turned, and asked the question. Sara's face said everything.
