It was late October, and Alex had the date locked for peak fall color. He'd been planning the trip from Texas for months — the Public Garden in full foliage was the one shot he wouldn't compromise on.

The plan
Planning a Boston proposal from another state means you can't scout it yourself, so I did that part. We mapped the route through the Garden, timed the light for the afternoon, and stayed in touch right up to the day. Fall is the one season where the date really matters here: the foliage window is short, and I'd rather a couple lock a date around it and let me sort out the rest than gamble on a random weekend.
The moment
He knelt, Kendyl said yes through happy tears, and I caught every second — the walk in, the turn, the ring, the first hug. The photos of Kendyl realizing what was happening are the ones that tell the story; that's why I stay hidden until the yes is out and only step forward once it's done.
Portraits after
Afterward, the nerves were gone and we wandered the Garden together, all smiles — past the pond, a swan drifting by — before heading up into Beacon Hill for portraits in the golden afternoon light. The brick and the gas lamps are a three-minute walk from the Garden, and in late October they're as good as the foliage. Two locations, one afternoon, and a couple of black-and-white frames that look nothing like the ones in the Garden.
If you're planning a fall proposal at the Public Garden
- Peak color is usually late October — give me the week you can travel and I'll tell you which afternoon to aim for.
- Fly-in proposals work best when I scout the spot and you just walk the route. You don't need to see it first.
- Add Beacon Hill for the portraits. It's next door, and the mix of foliage and brick is the best fall combination in the city.
