John didn't want to leave anything to chance — he started planning with me months in advance. We met up at Fan Pier in the Seaport a few weeks before the day to walk through the full plan in person.

The walk-through
Standing on the actual pier beats any map. We walked the route he'd take with Hannah, agreed where he'd stop, picked where I'd be tucked away, and talked through the backup if anything went sideways. By the day, John didn't have to think about logistics. All he had to do was bring Hannah and ask the question.
The moment
He led her down the waterfront like it was any other evening, knelt, and she said yes. The plan was done. He was present. That's how it should feel — and it's what he wrote in his review afterwards: stress free on the actual day.
Portraits after
We finished with portraits as the sun went down — Hannah with the ring, the two of them celebrating on the waterfront, a close embrace, and an engagement portrait with the skyline behind them. Fan Pier at sunset does most of the work; I just had to have them in the right place.
If you're planning a Fan Pier proposal
- Stand at the curve of the walkway, not the straightaway — the marina and the skyline both fall into the background.
- If you're local, I'm happy to walk the plan in person a few weeks out. It takes twenty minutes and removes all the guesswork.
- Use the lawn behind the walkway for the portraits after; the ICA plaza is a 90-second walk if the wind picks up.
