The plan
We mapped every detail in advance: the timing, the path into the square, where I'd be tucked away behind the fence line, the backup if anyone wandered through. Dartmouth Square is one of those small South End parks between the brownstones where you can be twenty feet from a busy street and feel completely alone, which is exactly why Chris picked it.
Then it rained
The day came, and it was pouring. Chris called me worried, ready to call it off. I told him not to think about it — that's my job. I watch the radar, not the window, and there was a gap coming. We waited for a window in the rain, he led Samantha into the square, and knelt under the trees. She said yes.
Why the rain helped
The square was empty, the light was soft, and the rain actually made it better — quiet, private, theirs. Wet stone, dripping leaves and nobody around is a better backdrop than a sunny Saturday with a crowd. By the time we walked out for a few portraits, the sun was breaking through.
If it's raining on your proposal day
- Don't call it off from the forecast. I'll tell you the morning of whether there's a window, and there usually is.
- Small tree-covered squares like Dartmouth Square give you shelter and privacy at the same time — an umbrella is a prop, not a problem.
- Have the indoor backup agreed before the day, but expect not to need it.
