The plan
He wanted Christopher Columbus Park — the wisteria trellis specifically, even though it was a little early in the season for the blooms. We planned the whole thing together over the next couple of weeks: where I'd be hidden along the harbor railing, what time the light would hit the trellis just right, how he'd guide Ally there without making her suspicious. By the time the day came, we both knew the plan inside out.
The moment
He brought her to the park for what felt like a casual afternoon walk, and the moment he stopped under the trellis, I was already in position. She had no idea I was there until it was over — and the look on her face when she figured it out is one of my favorite frames of the year.
Portraits after
We finished on the waterfront — the two of them under the trellis, a wide one with the harbor behind, a close portrait, and an engagement portrait to end on. The trellis works before the wisteria is out; the structure and the water do the job on their own, and there's a stretch of Harborwalk right there for the rest.
If you're planning a proposal at Christopher Columbus Park
- Stand at the harbor-facing end of the trellis, looking inward — that's the corner that photographs best.
- The wisteria bloom is a short, unpredictable window (usually late May to mid-June). Don't build the date around it unless you can be flexible.
- It's windy on the Harborwalk even in summer; bring a layer for the portraits.
