Rohan and Kim An came to the Arnold Arboretum with a few ideas of their own — and their dog in tow. The Arboretum is all winding paths, old trees, and quiet corners, which made for an easy, unhurried afternoon.

The session
No stiff posing — just the two of them (and the pup) moving through the green while the light did its thing. We walked a tree-lined path, stopped where the trees opened up, and had the dog along for all of it. Rohan mentioned in his review that they brought ideas and I folded them in; that's how I like a session to go. You know what feels like you, and I know where the light is.
Why the Arboretum for engagement photos
It's the biggest green space in Boston and it never feels crowded. Old trees, long paths, meadow edges and hills — you can get five different backdrops in a single walk without a car. It's also one of the most dog-friendly places in the city to shoot, which matters if your dog is part of the family.
The fast part
Some of my favorite sessions feel less like a shoot and more like a walk with friends. This was one of them. The gallery came back quickly, too — sneak peeks in the first 48 hours are standard for every session, and Rohan noted the full set arrived fast as well.
If you're planning an Arboretum engagement session
- Bring the dog. Leashes are fine in the frame, and a dog makes the photos look like your life rather than a shoot.
- Pick one area of the Arboretum rather than trying to see it all — a single loop gives you more variety than you'd expect.
- Afternoon light under the trees is soft and even; late summer keeps it green well into September.
