Joshua wanted to propose somewhere that felt like them — out on the water, away from everything. So we took a sailboat into Herring Cove, the sun high and the water that deep Cape Cod blue, and he asked her mid-ride.

Shooting from the boat
A proposal on a sailboat is a small-space problem: there's nowhere to hide, so I'm just another person on the boat with a camera. The only planning that matters is the cue — roughly when on the ride it happens, and which way you're facing, so the light is on her and the cove is behind you.
After the yes
We kept sailing for a while, just letting the afternoon stretch out — the two of them together on the deck, the boat out on the blue water, the sun doing what full sun does in Provincetown. Then we pulled in and finished with portraits on the pier: walking, close together, a wide one against the harbor, a closing frame in town.
Why it worked
One of those days that didn't need a backup plan. Provincetown in summer has the light, the water and the pier all within a few hundred yards, and a boat gives you a proposal nobody can wander into.

- Midday sun is fine on the water — the reflections fill in shadows — but bring sunglasses for after, not during.
