Somerville City Hall Wedding Photographer
An 1852 hilltop city hall, a granite castle down the street, and two hours of real photos.
Somerville City Hall doesn't get talked about the way Cambridge does, and that's a shame — it's an 1852 brick building with a white clocktower cupola, sitting on top of Central Hill at 93 Highland Avenue next to the library and the high school. It started life as the town's free high school before Somerville became a city in 1872, and it still feels more like a New England schoolhouse than a government office. For a small wedding, that's exactly the charm.
And here's the part most couples don't realize until I show them: five minutes downhill is Prospect Hill Tower, a 1903 granite castle with the entire Boston skyline laid out behind it. A city hall ceremony plus castle portraits, in one two-hour window — no other city hall in Greater Boston can do that.
The license, the clerk, the paperwork
You and your partner apply together in person at the City Clerk's office inside city hall — bring photo ID, your Social Security numbers, and the $50 license fee. The whole filing takes about 30 minutes. The office is open Monday–Wednesday 8:30–4, Thursday until 7 p.m. (the evening hours are a quiet advantage if you both work days), and Friday mornings until noon. After Massachusetts' three-day waiting period, your license is ready and stays valid for 60 days anywhere in the state.
One thing to know: Somerville doesn't run a big in-house ceremony operation the way Boston does. Most couples arrange a justice of the peace — or a friend with a one-day designation from the Secretary of State — and get married right on Central Hill. Ask the clerk about ceremony options when you file. The Massachusetts process itself is identical everywhere; my Cambridge City Hall wedding guide walks through the same intention-and-waiting-period steps one square over.
The portrait walk: castle, murals, neon
Start at the building. The brick facade, the cupola, the steps, and the Central Hill lawn between city hall and the library handle the classic shots and any family groupings.
Then Prospect Hill. The 1903 memorial tower — rusticated granite, genuinely castle-like — sits in a small park with downtown Boston stacked up behind it. It's the single best skyline backdrop of any city hall walk I shoot, and it's a five-minute drive or a fifteen-minute downhill stroll.
Or go full Somerville. Union Square's murals and brick storefronts are at the bottom of the hill; Davis Square brings neon, marquee lights, and that scrappy Somerville energy. Two hours of coverage comfortably fits the ceremony plus two of these stops.

Can we actually get married at Somerville City Hall?
You file your marriage license there, and many couples arrange a justice of the peace and exchange vows right on Central Hill — the 1852 building, the lawn, and the steps all work beautifully. Somerville doesn't run a large in-house ceremony operation the way Boston does, so confirm ceremony arrangements with the City Clerk when you file.
Where do we take portraits after a Somerville City Hall ceremony?
Prospect Hill Tower is the move — a 1903 granite castle five minutes downhill with the Boston skyline behind it. Union Square gives you murals and brick storefronts, Davis Square gives you neon and energy, and the Central Hill lawn by the library works for family groupings. Two hours covers the ceremony plus two stops easily.
