Salem City Hall Wedding Photographer

The oldest working city hall in Massachusetts — and the most photogenic square mile around it.

Salem City Hall is a small 1838 Greek Revival building at 93 Washington Street — dressed granite out front, a gilded eagle perched on the parapet (a copy of Samuel McIntire's original), and the distinction of being the oldest city hall in Massachusetts still in everyday use. The clerk's office in Room 3 has been issuing marriage licenses out of the same building for nearly two centuries.

But the reason couples choose Salem isn't the building — it's the mile around it. Federal mansions on Chestnut Street, the Common's bandstand, a working harbor with a lighthouse at the end of Derby Wharf. It's the rare city hall wedding where every portrait stop is a five-minute walk and none of them look like anywhere else in New England.

The license: Salem starts it online

Salem is one of the few clerk's offices that lets you begin your marriage intentions online before you come in. Then both partners visit Room 3 at city hall together with photo ID to finish the paperwork and pay the $40 application fee — which, unusually, includes one certified copy of your marriage certificate afterward. Massachusetts' three-day waiting period applies, and the license is valid for 60 days anywhere in the state. (In a genuine rush? The waiting period can only be waived by Probate Court on Federal Street, a block away.)

For the ceremony itself, most couples arrange a justice of the peace or a friend with a one-day designation and marry on the city hall steps, at the Common, or down at the wharf — confirm in-building options with the clerk when you file. The statewide paperwork rhythm is the same one in my Boston City Hall wedding guide.

The portrait walk: common, mansions, harbor

Salem Common. Three minutes from city hall — the 1802 cast-iron fence, the bandstand, big old trees. In foliage season it's one of the best town greens in the state.

Chestnut Street. The McIntire District's Federal mansions are the architectural shot — brick, fanlights, and doorways that look like wedding invitations. Quiet even in peak season.

Derby Wharf. Walk the long stone wharf at Salem Maritime National Historic Site to the little white lighthouse at the end — open water, masts, and the kind of horizon you can't get at any other city hall in the state. The Essex Street pedestrian mall and Pickering Wharf fill in anything between. One honest note: in October, Salem hosts hundreds of thousands of visitors — weekday mornings stay workable, but if you want the city to yourselves, spring through September is the move.

My Elopement package is $1,800 — two hours of coverage, 100+ edited images, a sneak peek within 48 hours, and full printing rights, with travel anywhere in Massachusetts included. Salem's marriage application fee is $40 and includes one certified copy of your marriage certificate.

How do we get a marriage license in Salem?

Salem lets you start your marriage intentions online, then both partners come to the City Clerk's office in Room 3 of city hall at 93 Washington Street with photo ID to finish the paperwork and pay the $40 fee. After the three-day waiting period you pick up the license, which is valid for 60 days anywhere in Massachusetts.

Can the ceremony happen at Salem City Hall?

Your license is issued there, and the 1838 granite facade with its gilded eagle makes a striking ceremony backdrop. Most couples arrange a justice of the peace — or a friend with a one-day designation from the Secretary of State — and marry on the steps, at Salem Common, or down at Derby Wharf. Confirm in-building options with the City Clerk when you file.

Where do we take portraits after a Salem City Hall ceremony?

Salem packs an absurd amount into a walkable mile: Salem Common's bandstand and iron fence, Chestnut Street's Federal mansions in the McIntire District, the Essex Street pedestrian mall, and Derby Wharf with its little white lighthouse and the harbor behind it. Two hours covers the ceremony plus two or three of these.

Should we avoid getting married in Salem in October?

Not necessarily — but know what you're walking into. October brings hundreds of thousands of visitors and downtown gets packed, especially weekends. If you love the energy, a weekday morning ceremony works beautifully and the light is gorgeous. If you want quiet, May, June, and September give you the same city with breathing room.
